Imagine a healthcare system where everyone, regardless of gender or race, has the best chance at survival and health.
That vision is at risk, and we need your help to protect it.

The ATOM Project (Access to Opportunities in Medicine) was created to tackle a major, but fixable, reason why women and people of color leave the medical field: unfair access to critical career-enhancing opportunities.
This is not just a problem for doctors; it’s a problem that impacts all of us.
-

-
-
- Patients treated by female physicians in the US have better outcomes: lower death rates, fewer hospital readmissions, and better recovery after surgery.
- Patients matched with a physician of their same race are more likely to get critical preventative care – like flu vaccines, cancer screenings, and live-saving procedures.
- Communities with more Black physicians see Black residents living longer, healthier lives.

We all deserve a medical workforce that reflects and serves us. But right now, we are losing talented future doctors because the system isn’t fair.
Why We Need Your Help
Our team at ATOM, partnering with one of the nation’s top medical schools, developed a proven solution:
We created the Faculty Tasking Tool, an easy-to-use technology that helps medical leaders make sure they are fairly offering growth opportunities to everyone, not just a few.
Our early results are incredibly promising and we have the data to prove it.
Unfortunately, just as we were getting ready to expand our work, our federal grant was cancelled – part of a wave of funding cuts to projects that support gender equity in science and medicine.
We are determined to continue collecting critical data, analyze what’s working, and share it widely, so every hospital, university, and patient can benefit.
This project is a collaboration between UC Law SF and UCSF. For more information, go to the UCSF website: https://integration.ucsf.edu/atom-project
